After a lifetime of being sheltered, I decided to study abroad in St. Petersburg to push myself out of my comfort zone. Dimitri definitely fits the bill. He's gorgeous, mysterious, and everything I never knew I wanted.

I'm willing to give him my innocence, but he demands more. When it's time for me to return to America, he won't let me go. My lover becomes my captor. He wants all of me, even if that means pushing me to my breaking point. He won't stop until he owns my body and soul.

Czar eBook Julia Sykes

Part of the "Impossible" series, but definitely my be read as a standalone.

This book happens out of sequence with the rest of the series. It basically gives you the back-story on a minor character introduced in a previous book and how he obtains his slave. While this villain goes on to "star" in another book, this background information is not essential to the rest of the series moving forward. This book is somewhat of a dark rabbit hole that the author went down for a short while.

WITH THAT SAID... it is a very nice, intense read. It is good to see the villain in his element, his manipulation of the victim and his complete self-absorption. The author stays true to who she has been in this series. Nothing about her characters or her writing are lacking. The characters are rich, their interactions with each other are portrayed realistically, the sex scenes pain a picture that really make you FEEL. The book ends at an appropriate place and is not a cliffhanger. Personally, I would have liked to have just a touch more of the relationship between victim anbd villain, or the victim's interaction with other characters right after the major change in the relationship, as well as how the villain facilitates, manipulates, and reacts to those interactions.

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. If you ave triggers that stem from violent captivity, mind games, degrading of women, and/or rough, abusive sex, this is not the book for you. If you can handle dark story-lines, this book will not disappoint.

I am a big fan of this series. This is my 2nd time through this series. It has been just as moving the 2nd time around.

Highly recommend.

Czar eBook Julia Sykes Reviews

This was a character study of Dimitri, who we met briefly in King. Clara wants to kill this guy - with some great amount of passion - and this book gives you his back story so you, too, can get on the "let's kill Dimitri" band wagon for the next book. Both the H and the h are extremely well drawn characters - a testament this this author's great writing ability. There's not a lot of plot because this novella has to be the set up for Clara's book.

Dimitri is a bad guy - we know he is involved in human trafficking from King, so the fact that he takes Alicia is unsurprising, and you could see it from a mile away. What we learn is how he got to be awful, and then we watch him practice his bad side (and whatever remains of his good side, for there are glimpses of that as well) on Alicia. So if you didn't already hate him, you will now.

Alicia never had a chance against Dimitri. The fact that she stayed as strong as she could for as long as she did gives me hope for her in the next book.

Can't wait for the next installment
Good book, with a highly unlikable male lead. I love Alicia and my heart continually broke for her. She has such a loving and caring nature, unfortunately that is used against her. I felt a deep connection to Alicia and that made his book difficult to read. Some of the content hit a little to clos rot home. So warning to anyone who has been in an abusive relationship or dealt with sexual assault. Spoilers ahead- stop reading now if you don't want to know! Alicia is kidnapped by a man she thought she loved. He rapes her and brainwashes her by isolating her and forcing her to do things she doesn't feel comfortable with. Dimitri is a cold bastard and there is no other way to describe him. This book is well written and the story really helps explain what happens in crusader and highlander. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see alternating chapters, because I wanted to know what Dimitri was thinking. Over all this is a good book.
Czar is one of the darker reads in the Impossible Series by Julia Sykes. The book was well written, however it does touch on some very sensitive subjects. This book is not for people who can't handle reading about abusive relationahips.

Alicia is an American who is studying abroad in Russia. While out at a club, she meets the very handsome and rich Russian Dimitri. They start dating and Alicia falls in love. Even goes as far as giving her virginity to him.

Knowing Alicia will be leaving soon to go back to America, Dimitri decides to kidnap her. He forces her into the BDSM lifestyle (well his version of it anyway). He doesn't want a sub, he wants a slave. Someone who will give him complete control and uses no safe words. He eventually get her to break and she becomes the perfect pet. Will Alicia ever find a way to be free?

Even though this was darker then I normally read, I enjoyed it.
This novella really deserves 5 stars for the story itself, and the way the author stayed true to the characters, especially Dimitri. Even though, I was really REALLY hoping he would do a turn about and redeem himself to Alicia. It is a story about a naive American girl in Russia, where she meets a more dangerous man than she could have imagined. He makes her fall in love with him. Although it appears that he has never received the willing love from anyone, Dimitri decides upon receiving said devotion that he cannot let her leave Russia and return to America. What really struck me as heartbreaking was that even though he had kidnapped her and sexually tortured her, so to speak, he continued to act like Alicia was different to him. That, perhaps, Alicia would be the one to make him see the error in his ways, and take her from being his lowly sex slave to actually an equal, one that he would marry and have children with. Then, it came crashing down at the end. It shouldn't have shocked me as much as it did being that Dimitri is what his father has made him to be, and he cannot comprehend a partnership like an actual marriage between him and Alicia. In his eyes, they are eternally bonded through the master and slave relationship... I felt somewhat betrayed at the end. I had pushed myself through the book hoping that there would be a light at the end. Being that this was my first Julia Sykes novell/novella, I was not prepared for such a depressing ending (at least depressing in my mind since it didn't end in a total HEA fashion).
