Is it "shocking" that Sergio and Pablo Shoklender, two teenage sons of privilege in 80s Argentina, should murder their parents, stuff them in a car trunk, and ride off in different directions on horseback? Or is it consistent with the violence with which capitalism and privilege direct and protect themselves, through oppression, theft and the dirtiest of wars? As the late Argentine poet Jorge Santiago Perednik has written, "Terror settles in people and affects them in unforeseen ways; in the case of Argentine poets, whatever they wrote about, even if they didn't intend to, they wrote about terror." His long poem, "The Shock of the Lenders," is a tour de force in the truest sense of that term, going blow for blow, spectacle for spectacle with the implacable, immoral Power that maimed and split society during Argentina's Dirty War and continues to make and split the world today. Perednik meets language at the end of its tether and makes it speak the unspeakable.

I first encountered the Shock of the Lenders in the late-80s through a friend of Perednik's and have attempted my own, I must say, unsuccessful translations. The current volume, translated by Molly Weigel, is able to capture a roughly equivalent language playfulness and musicality appropriate to English in what must be the greatest reason for facing page presentation of any translation in history. Although the English speaks for itself, and an Argentine reader would I assume have the same facility (not much!) in understanding the Spanish, I sometimes think a reader like me, with imperfect understanding of one language, would find this text a gold mine of intertextual call and response enriched by the interplays and transformation (transubstantiations?)forced on each language by its stubborn refusal to be interchangeable. Both languages sing and cry and bitterly laugh, however. Ultimately, we have a poem written in the face of a despair and oppression (the Argentine military dictatorship of the late century)hopefully none of us will ever need to encounter, a poem that speaks to oppression and terror with the evasiveness and mockery necessary and appropriate to its situation in history. What can one do with the absolutely certain and coldly powerful (both linguistic and political) but to question it, inhabit the border regions its certainty fails to include? A far cry from the self-absorbed LANGUAGE poets of the North American 80s, borders of signification are explored rather than exploited. This text de-centers and questions certainty with dread purpose and creates an indeterminacy that leaves us more humble than confused, more compassionate than impressed. Yes, please buy this book. I went to the book launch and was saddened that after the pain and intelligence of response to horror finally made it to an international audience whole, it happened in a room of 20 people. This book should, and I believe ultimately will, be read.

For anyone who enjoys Latin American poetry but has limited Spanish, Molly Weigel's translation of "The Shock of the Lenders" is a godsend. The book not only makes a challenging and important poem accessible to English speakers, it captures as much of the diction, nuance, emotional tenor, and linguistic subversion of the original as seems possible. An ear attuned to Argentine Spanish, a familiarity with avant-garde poetry, and conversations with the poet himself have helped Weigel recreate the poem's effects in English. With grace and wit, she makes difficult judgments about how to preserve rhyme, when to invent or disrupt words, and how to leave open multiple possible meanings. We owe Weigel our thanks for her sensitive translation of this troubling and remarkable poem.
Poetry at its best, enlightening, playful, transformational, and a joy to read. At times, looking at the news, some events seem to contain, reflect, and explicate the contradictions, struggles, and anxieties that haunt a whole society. Rarely, however, this intuition can be put into writing and communicated with artfulness, humor, and critical depth. Perednik's The Shock of the Lenders achieves this elusive quality of opening up an event, the case surrounding an apparently private crime, the parricide in the Lender's family, to explore its connections to larger social, political, and personal dynamics in late 20th century Argentina. With time, the book has gained a prophetic aura, as recent events surrounding the Lender brothers have brought back memories of the earlier case. The translation of a text that is so grounded in the linguistic peculiarities of Argentinean Spanish is an extremely difficult endeavor. The result, however, provides new light to the original and is excellent poetry on its own.
